So I have 185 stops a day plus I’ll usually get asked to rescue because I finish about an hour early.
Well at around 5:15ish (we have to be back by 8PM, last wave of the day), I have 50 stops left which I could finish by 6:30 easily. So when I get to my stop I’m confused to see one of my dispatchers in a rental waiting for me. I ask him if he’s rescuing me and he says yes, and I ask why because I’m not behind. He tells me that they’re gonna need me to do rescues so he can get back to the warehouse since he’s closing so he’s taking some stops from me. I actually was pretty happy with that idea.
So I finish my last stops at about 6 and call the dispatcher asking for an address for the rescue. He apologizes and says that they actually don’t need any now and I can head back. I was so excited because I haven’t had a 140 stop route and been done at 6PM since like October and I have plans to hang out at a game night with friends tonight.
So I’m in a fantastic mood. Super excited and jamming to my music. I’m coming over a bridge literally one exit from my warehouse and I see something in the road ahead of me on the right shoulder of the lane. It looked big, my first thought was maybe a tarp or something. Something common that falls off of people’s cars on a busy highway. As I get closer I realize it’s a dead animal. I think it’s a coyote but then I’m horrified to realize it’s a dead dog. I freak out because I’m about to run into it so I turn my wheel to avoid it only to see another dead dog on the left side of the lane, not more than 10 feet from the other one.
This really affected me. I love animals, especially dogs. It didn’t look like they were hit by any cars and they were so close together so the only thing I can think that happened was that they must have been in someone’s bed on a pickup truck and had fallen out almost in unison. It’s a highway so cars are traveling above 60 miles an hour.
I was so upset when I got to the warehouse and I just can’t get the image out of my head. These were big dogs. I couldn’t see their breed too well because it happened so fast but they looked like some kind of Shepard.
So yeah. Please secure your dogs if they ride in your truck or better yet don’t put them in the bed at all.
Tl:dr: Finished early and was excited but got met with the traumatizing images of two dead dogs who probably fell off a pickup truck right when I was about to arrive at the warehouse.
